West Ham are reported to be ‘very keen’ on Watford winger Ismaila Sarr, according to The Athletic.
The report states that the Hammers’ interest isn’t likely to materialise into an offer this month, however, as the club prioritises funds to sign a striker to replace Sebastien Haller.
David Moyes is thought to be an admirer of the Senegal international but the club would have to break their transfer record, currently £45m for Haller, in order to land the 22-year-old, with his asking price set at £50m.
The winger was one of the few shining lights from Watford’s 2019/20 Premier League campaign as they were ultimately relegated, despite his five goals and six assists across the campaign.
One performance in particular brought him to wider attention as the ‘rapid’ winger, as described by Sadio Mane, tore apart eventual Premier League champions Liverpool, in a 3-0 victory at Vicarage Road last February.
Predominantly operating as a right winger, the youngster has continued to be an influence this season for the Hornets, scoring four goals and setting up five.
READ WEST HAM VERDICT
Signing Sarr in January would make little sense for West Ham, especially given his lofty price tag.
Despite being capable of playing centrally, his best position is undoubtedly out wide, a department where the Irons are currently strong.
Whilst signing someone with the ability of Sarr would make sense as he seems to have a big future as a top-flight player, with the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Pablo Fornals and Said Benrahma occupying the wide positions at West Ham, there isn’t a major need for the Senegal ace right now.
