Fans React To Irons’ Tongue-In-Cheek Throwback to Paolo Di Canio Wondergoal

West Ham’s official Twitter account elicited plenty of reaction with a tongue-in-cheek post about Paolo Di Canio‘s famous goal against Wimbledon back in March 2000.

The post stated ‘Di Canio vs Wimbledon is the greatest Premier League goal ever ⓘ 𝗢𝗳𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗲’, causing a huge reaction from fans of clubs all over the country, as well as many of the Irons faithful.

Assisted by a pinpoint Trevor Sinclair diagonal ball, the Italian maestro, never far away from either a magical moment of a controversial one, seemed to hang in mid-air as he volleyed the ball into the far corner past a floundering Neil Sullivan in the Wimbledon goal. The Italian’s strike opened the scoring at Upton Park in a 2-1 win for West Ham, then managed by Harry Redknapp.

Di Canio scored 51 goals in 138 appearances for the Hammers and has gone down as a legendary figure in the club’s history.

One thing is for sure – the Di Canio goal is well worthy of a place in the conversation about the all-time great Premier League strikes, and 20 years on, it continues to elicit plenty of reaction throughout the country:

matchday.
