According to Claret and Hugh, West Ham are set to trigger a one-year extension in the contract of midfielder Robert Snodgrass and we feel this should upset Hammers fans.
The midfielder’s current deal expires at the end of next season but after some decent displays during this campaign, it seems the club are ready to keep him on for a further year.
The 32-year-old has managed to find the back of the net five times in the Premier League this season, whilst also providing five assists (Transfermarkt).
However, in recent matches, the Scottish international has lost his spot in the starting line-up.
We believe that fans should be angry by this reported decision to extend Snodgrass’ deal.
Firstly, because he is ageing. Snoddy will be 34 and a half by the time the new deal finishes, which we feel is slightly too old to be playing at the highest level.
We feel a wiser decision could be to let Snodgrass run out his current deal and then replace him with a younger and more energetic midfielder next summer.
It also shows that the club doesn’t seem to be committed to giving younger players that are coming through the academy the chance to shine in the first-team.
Snodgrass is reportedly earning £40,000 a week at the Hammers, according to data website Spotrac, and we feel that by letting him leave, there will be more space on the wage bill to accommodate a new player.
We don’t want to see him go this summer, but after next year, we really don’t see how the ageing Scot could be of use to the Hammers.
