Rice ‘gutted’ at poor performance in Cardiff defeat

Declan Rice has vented his frustration after West Ham United tasted defeat once again at a bottom-half team on Saturday, this time a 2-0 loss at relegation battlers Cardiff City.

The Hammers conceded Junior Hoilett’s opener after just four minutes before Victor Camarasa doubled Cardiff’s lead just seven minutes into the second half to kill off the visitors for good.

Speaking to West Ham TV after full-time, Rice made it clear that although the club have started 2019 very well at the London Stadium, away form needs to be picked up as they chase 7th-place in the Premier League.

It’s very disappointing and seems like the common theme, to be honest. We come away to these clubs who are down the bottom of the table and we get beat. It happened at Bournemouth, Burnley and these are all great chances that we’ve had to move up towards seventh and it was the same on Saturday. It wasn’t meant to be and I’m gutted because it was a poor performance.

Despite the result, it’s an exciting time for the promising midfielder.

He looks dead set to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the upcoming European Championship Qualifiers against the Czech Republic and Montenegro later this month.

Rice switched allegiances from the Republic of Ireland in late February after enjoying a breakout season under Manuel Pellegrini in East London, and will be hoping to help guide West Ham to European qualification between now and the end of the campaign.
