West Ham enter the race to sign Italian defender Gian Marco Ferrari

West Ham will rival Marseille for the signature of Italian defender Gian Marco Ferrari this summer.

Gianluca Di Marzio reports that the two clubs are considering a move for the 26-year-old.

There is also thought to be interest from other Ligue 1 sides.

The player spent last season on loan at Sampdoria from Sassuolo but the former turned down the chance to sign him permanently.

Ferrari featured 31 times for Sampdoria in Serie A last season.

Ferrari originally came through the ranks at Parma but has endured something of a nomadic career ever since.

He has had spells at Gubbio, Crotone and Sassuolo but now looks set to make a move away from Italy.

New West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini has made it his mission to improve the backline at the London Stadium.

The Hammers have already signed Ryan Fredericks and Issa Diop this summer as they look to improve on their 13th place finish.
