West Ham may play behind closed doors after crowd trouble

Premier League side West Ham United have been warned that they may have to play their future home fixtures behind closed doors if there is a repeat of the fan trouble that occurred against Burnley, according to a report on the Evening Standard.

The London Stadium saw fans running onto the pitch and fighting in the stands with police during the 3-0 loss against Burnley.

Many of the fans made their way in front of the Directors’ Box to protest against the owners and directors of the club, who were quickly ushered away from their seats by the security.

West Ham midfielder Mark Noble was visibly frustrated with the fans who decided to run onto the pitch during the match.

The Football Association are investigating the incident and have warned the club that part of the stadium or even the whole stadium could be closed if it happens again.

Following a meeting between the Safety Advisory Group, which consists of the stadium operators, LS185, Newham council, the Metropolitan Police, the London Legacy Development Corporation and the club, it was decided that there will be a police presence inside the stadium for the next home match against Southampton at the end of the month.

There will also be new restrictions in place for fans regarding areas of the stadium that they can go to, with the area near the Directors’ Box becoming restricted.

West Ham are expected to be hit with a heavy fine by the FA for the incident.
