The midfielder joins on a short-term deal from Inter Milan as he looks to get his career back on track, following a difficult spell in Italy so far.
Mario is an established Portuguese international and was in the same squad as Hammers defender Jose Fonte, as the Portugal national team lifted the title at Euro 2016.
The international teammates have a strong relationship and, as quoted by the Evening Standard, Mario explained that Fonte played a role in his decision to arrive at the London Stadium.
Jose explained to me a little more about the club and also the song we have, I’m Forever Blowing Bubbles and that, of course, it was really important for me to join West Ham!

West Ham boss David Moyes had been chasing a new central midfielder for the large majority of the January transfer window and it seems he has found his man in Mario.
The 25-year-old has made only five league starts this season and was unable to contribute a lot to Inter’s bid for success in the Italian top flight. He’ll hope for improved fortunes as he aims to progress in his first venture in English football.
It’s a really historic club with an amazing stadium and amazing players. I am just trying to know a little bit more about the club every day and now I have some time to know more.
