West Ham United defender Jose Fonte has played down comments made by the club’s owner David Sullivan, who said that his children begged him not to sign the centre-back, according to a report on the Telegraph.
Sullivan made the remarkable revelation that his children did not want him to sign the defender from fellow Premier League club Southampton before the 1-0 win over champions Chelsea at the London Stadium.
The Portuguese has failed to settle in well at the Hammers and has struggled to find the form that he had with Southampton.

The defender is currently sidelined through injury but said regarding the comments:
It’s ignorance. I’m not going to say anything. It’s not going to change who I am. It’s not going to change what I do. I’m going to keep being the good professional that I am. I am going to keep working hard to try and help my team-mates and the manager. What has been said has no effect on me or who I am.
The centre-back may now look for a move away from the London club but he has remained tight-lipped on his future at the club.
Fonte insists that he will continue to go about his work in a professional manner and is focused on recovering and helping the team escape the relegation battle.
