Bundesliga club Schalke have opened talks with Hamburg for West Ham United and Southampton target Nicolai Muller, who has failed to agree a new contract at his current club, according to Bild.
The 29-year-old’s contract with Hamburg expires next summer and the club are desperate to keep hold of the player even if he denies a contract extension and then leaves on a free transfer next summer.
The player has been linked strongly with a move to the Premier League, with West Ham and Southampton leading the chase for his signature, while German side Wolfsburg are also monitoring the situation.

Hamburg want to keep Muller but they may be pressured into letting the player go before the transfer window closes.
Schalke have contacted Muller’s agent and talks are moving steadily with the player open to the move but the only thing standing in his way is his current club who are adamant that they will not let him go.
West Ham have already strengthened this summer with manager Slaven Bilic bringing in Marko Arnautovic as his new winger.
Muller would definitely be a positive addition to the squad and will give Bilic more depth of quality in his squad as he looks to push for a European position this season.
