West Ham not giving up on Vermaelen pursuit

According to an exclusive report from Italian news outlet TMW, West Ham are not giving up their chase for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen just yet; despite Serie A giants AS Roma leading the chase.

The 30-year-old has not had the rub of the green when it came to playing time at Barcelona, with injuries pushing the Belgian further and further down the pecking order.

However, it now looks as though a move away from the Nou Camp could be on the cards and West Ham are one of the teams pondering a move for the experienced defender.

It looks as though Roma are front-runners for Vermaelen’s signature and are the side closest to sealing a deal for the centre-back, however, a fee has not yet been agreed.

West Ham could look to hijack Roma’s move for Vermaelen, though, as they look to bolster their squad and their defensive reinforcements ahead of what promises to be a demanding season with their potential involvement in this season’s Europa League.

Vermaelen would provide a lot of experience to the West Ham back-line, given his time at Arsenal prior to his move to Barcelona.

Given his age and his injury worries, it’s hard to imagine that Vermaelen would leave too big a dent in The Hammers’ transfer budget if they do make a move.
