Alex Pike set to cut Charlton trial short

West Ham defender Alex Pike is set to have his trial with Charlton cut short this week with interest from League Two clubs mounting.

According to regional paper the South London Press, Pike, who impressed in the Addicks’ pre-season friendly against Welling United last week, is unlikely to take part in their fixture with Bromley tomorrow.

The young fullback joined the club on a week-long trial ahead of a proposed season-long loan move, and Charlton boss Russell Slade was full of praise for the defender.

“I was pleased with him. We spoke to West Ham and they were more than happy for us to have a look at him.

“He’s only been in for a couple of days but I’ve been pleased with him – he’s put in a nice little performance there.”

Chris Solly’s return to action has also dented Pike’s hopes of featuring again for the League One side in pre-season as the fellow right-back is expected to be picked ahead of the Hammers youngster.

The 19-year-old made his first-team debut for West Ham last season in the Europa League qualifiers and is under contract until next summer and hopes to make an impression this term before his contract expires.

It’s believed there is interest from several League Two sides to sign Pike on a permanent basis from West Ham and the defender could cut short his Charlton trial to pursue a permanent move.
