West Ham to compete in Wiesbaden Lily Cup

West Ham’s U17 side have been confirmed as participants in the 24th edition of the Wiesbaden Lily Cup, taking place on January 21-22nd 2017.

Tournament director Jorg Wintermeyer has hailed West Ham’s inclusion in the competition as it has now helped the tournament become the best indoor competition in it’s age category.

I’m very proud of this field of competitors. The Liliencup is now the top indoor tournament in U17-region.

Fellow Premier League outfit Aston Villa will also be present, while the U17 sides of recognisable European clubs such as Schalke, Rapid Wien, Hamburg, Red Bull Salzburg, Eintracht Frankfurt and Mainz will be participating as well.

It’s a two-day tournament, of a similar format to the Hong Kong sevens competition the Hammers participated in earlier this summer.

West Ham took an experiences squad featuring the likes of Lewis Page and Alex Pike as they progressed to the final where they were defeated by Aston Villa – a club they could face in January.

The winter tournament would be a good learning experience for many of the Hammers’ academy players as it would break the mould of their mundane experience so far.

Group A:. Spvgg Sonnenberg, Hamburger SV, Eintracht Frankfurt, Rapid Wien, Slavia Prague, Aston Villa.

Group B: SV Wehen Wiesbaden, FC Schalke 04, Mainz 05, Red Bull Salzburg, Young Boys Bern, West Ham United.
