Sunderland appear to have beaten West Ham in the race to sign former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko from Roma this summer after lodging a €18m bid for his services.
According to Italian football journalist Emanuele Giulianelli, the Black Cats will make a renewed bid for Dzeko in the next few days and a move will be solely down to Dzeko.

Roma signed Dzeko on loan at the start of last season but the deal contained a fied agreement for the move to be made permanent this summer for a fee of £8m.

However, manager Luciano Spaletti is already looking to sell the striker who failed to live up to the hype when he first joined, scoring just eight Serie A goals in 31 appearances last season.
The Hammers were interested in Dzeko but his £130,000-a-week wage demands have put them off on pursuing a deal unless he considers a pay-cut.
