West Ham line up Niang swoop as back-up plan

West Ham are believed to be lining up a move for AC Milan striker M’Baye Niang – should they fail in moves to sign his team-mate Carlos Bacca or Juventus’ Simone Zaza.

According to Italian source Calciomercato, The Hammers, well-known to be in the market for a striker or two this summer, have scoured Europe far and wide to find a forward to their liking.

Their search has proven fruitless in France, so they’ve begun searching Italy to add to their ranks and have identified young French forward M’Baye Niang as a possible signing.

Primary targets remain Carlos Bacca and Simone Zaza however, but both would come at astronomical fees.

West Ham are reported to have had a £15m bid for the Colombian Bacca turned down already this summer. In his debut season in Serie A, Bacca netted 20 goals following his move from Sevilla.

Should Milan hold firm on Bacca, Juventus’ Simone Zaza is next on West Ham’s shortlist of strikers. The Italian international is low down in their pecking order, behind the likes of Paulo Dybala, Mario Mandzukic and Alvaro Morata in Turin and could consider a move away for more regular first-team football.

The Hammers tried to sign Zaza last season on loan from Juventus after it became clear he wouldn’t be playing every week, but the Serie A champions turned down an approach.

If Juventus remain firm on their stance to keep Zaza, Niang becomes and increasingly intriguing option for Slaven Bilic. The former France U21 international netted eight goals and registered four assists in 21 appearances last term, but only played five minutes of football since February following a car accident.

The 21-year-old was one of Europe’s most promising young forward while plying his trade in France with Caen, but his career has stuttered some-what in Milan.
