West Ham United may have exited the Carabao Cup against Fulham, but Lewis Orford strengthened his case for a bigger Championship role.
The 20-year-old produced an assured midfield display during Tuesday’s 3-2 defeat at the London Stadium, coping impressively against Premier League opposition.
Orford completed 49 of his 53 attempted passes while recording nine recoveries. Those numbers underline the composure and defensive awareness he brought to Nuno Espírito Santo’s midfield.
His performance now gives the West Ham boss another selection decision before Saturday’s trip to Millwall.
Lewis Orford gives West Ham selection decision
Orford’s involvement has fluctuated during the opening weeks of the season.
He was left out of the squad against Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month, despite previously showing why he could force a crucial selection call.
Against Fulham, however, the academy graduate was trusted from the start alongside Arne Engels in midfield.
Orford responded with another composed showing.
He was prepared to receive possession under pressure and helped West Ham play through Fulham’s press rather than simply surrendering territory.
That ability should be especially significant for Nuno as he decides how to approach Saturday’s Championship meeting with Millwall.
Orford has already demonstrated his influence this season. His performance against Southampton was among the standouts in Read West Ham’s player ratings from the 4-1 Carabao Cup victory.
Orford pushes for Millwall opportunity
The question now is whether the Fulham performance earns Orford another start.
West Ham have several midfield options, while the demands of a Championship promotion campaign mean Nuno will continue rotating his squad.
Orford, though, offers something valuable.
His willingness to take the ball in tight areas gives West Ham another route through midfield, while nine recoveries against Fulham showed he can contribute without possession.
Tuesday’s defeat ended West Ham’s Carabao Cup run, but it may have provided Nuno with something more useful for the weeks ahead.
Orford has made another compelling case for increased Championship minutes.
With Millwall next, the academy graduate has given his manager a genuine selection decision.
