Under the official Carabao Cup competition rules, matches in rounds one, two, three, four and five go straight to a penalty shootout if the score is level at the end of 90 minutes.

That means West Ham and Fulham could have their fourth-round place decided from the penalty spot on Tuesday.

Does West Ham vs Fulham go straight to penalties?

Yes.

If West Ham and Fulham are drawing when the final whistle goes after 90 minutes, the tie will move immediately to penalties.

There is no 30-minute period of extra time in the third round.

The EFL regulations state that no extra time is played in rounds one through five, with the winner instead determined by kicks from the penalty mark.

For Nuno Espirito Santo, that could make his substitutions particularly important if the tie remains close late on.

When is extra time used in the Carabao Cup?

Extra time does return later in the competition.

The rules specify that an additional 30 minutes can be played if the scores are level following the second leg of a semi-final or in the final.

If the teams still cannot be separated after extra time, the match is then decided by penalties.

West Ham therefore know exactly what awaits them on Tuesday: win inside 90 minutes or be prepared for a shootout.
