Nuno gives Jamie Vardy verdict as West Ham weigh shock free transfer

Nuno Espírito Santo reportedly believes Jamie Vardy still has another season in him as West Ham United continue to consider a surprise move for the veteran striker. The latest Jamie Vardy West Ham update gives fresh substance to a transfer story which emerged earlier this week.

ReadWestHam reported on Sunday that West Ham were monitoring Vardy’s situation, with the 39-year-old available on a free transfer following his departure from Cremonese. At that stage, there was no suggestion that talks had started.

There has now been a significant update on how Nuno views the former Leicester City striker.

Nuno verdict emerges on Jamie Vardy West Ham move

A West Ham transfer source has told Claret & Hugh that there is substance behind the club’s interest in Vardy.

Asked about the forward, the source said: “Manager thinks he has a season left in him.”

That does not mean a deal is agreed, but it suggests Vardy is more than simply another name being loosely linked with West Ham.

Nuno wants another striker before the transfer window closes. The Hammers have been pursuing Troy Parrott, although AZ Alkmaar rejected their opening offer and are holding out for around €20million. Vardy has subsequently emerged as a possible alternative who would not require a transfer fee.

The England international spent last season with Cremonese, scoring seven Serie A goals before becoming a free agent this summer.

Age inevitably makes any Vardy deal a short-term gamble, but West Ham’s immediate objective is also clear. Nuno needs a squad capable of challenging for promotion from the Championship at the first attempt, and Vardy has vast experience of English football.

His possible arrival should not prevent the club from pursuing a younger long-term striker.

The latest indication, however, is that Nuno believes Vardy can still contribute now, keeping a surprise move firmly on West Ham’s agenda.
