ReadWestHam Expect Gustavo Sá Deal Completed in 48 Hours

West Ham United’s summer rebuild is about to get its most intriguing addition yet. Gustavo Sá, the 21-year-old captain of Famalicão and of Portugal’s Under-21 side, is reportedly preparing to travel to England for a medical ahead of a move to the London Stadium worth around €20million (£17m). According to our club sources at ReadWestHam.com. It is expected the club will announce the deal within 48-72 hours.

This is everything we know about the deal at the time of publishing. We will continue to update as news becomes available.

Who is Gustavo Sá?

Sá is an attacking midfielder who has spent his entire senior career at Famalicão, where he became club captain for the 2025/26 season at just 20 years old. According to reports in Portugal, he has already passed 100 Primeira Liga appearances. A remarkable volume of top-flight football for a player his age.

He captains Portugal’s Under-21s and is widely rated among the country’s best young prospects. Portuguese daily O Jogo reported that Sá turned down a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia in January, preferring to wait for an opportunity in a more competitive environment. That opportunity, it appears, is east London.

How much are West Ham paying for Gustavo Sá?

According to Record and A Bola, the two clubs are finalising a deal worth around €20m (£17m). Famalicão were reportedly holding out for €25m, but have accepted West Ham’s lower offer. Still comfortably the biggest direct sale in the Minho club’s history. Bola na Rede reports that his contract carried a €50m release clause, which puts the negotiated fee into flattering context.

As with any deal at this stage, the figures are reported rather than confirmed, and the final structure of payments was said to be the last detail under discussion.

What contract will he sign?

Portuguese reports state Sá is set to sign a contract running until 2031. A five-year commitment that says plenty about how Nuno views him. Not a quick fix for the Championship, but a cornerstone of the squad they hope takes them back to the Premier League and keeps them there.

Where does he fit in Nuno’s midfield?

The obvious question after a summer in which West Ham opened talks for James McAtee is how the pieces fit together. Mateus Fernandes’ club-record £85m sale to Tottenham left a creative void in the middle of the pitch, and Sá tall, technical and still developing. He is a different profile rather than a like-for-like replacement.

Expect Nuno to use him as one of the advanced midfielders in his preferred structure, with licence to arrive in the box. In a Championship season likely to be defined by breaking down deep blocks, a midfielder comfortable receiving between the lines is exactly the type new recruitment director Nils Koppen has been tasked with finding.
