- West Ham United reportedly require £150 million from player sales
- Former Irons’ striker Gianluca Scamacca is set to re-join Roma
- Crysencio Summerville could also join the capital club after being selected for the Netherlands World Cup squad
West Ham United’s relegation from the Premier League to the Championship will further compound their precarious financial position. The Hammers reportedly require £150 million from player sales, a report that comes after the club recorded a £104.2 million loss in their latest accounts.
West Ham’s lavish spending, with over £685 million on playing expenditure in the last four seasons, combined with the club’s slip in the English divisions, will lead to the sale of current attractive assets. Mateus Fernandes has been earmarked for a mega-money move, with growing interest in the Portuguese midfielder potentially sparking a bidding war.
The East London club also owes other clubs a mouth-watering £196m in transfer payments. So, any sort of financial manoeuvring that allows for a more relaxed cash flow will be welcomed, including potential sell-on clauses on former players.
Gianluca Scamacca on the move as Roma circle with 10% sell-on for West Ham
One former West Ham player who could be on the move is Gianluca Scamacca. The Italian striker was acquired by West Ham from Sassuolo for £22.5 million, with a further £5 million if he fulfilled specific requirements under David Moyes in 2022. However, after a barren season at the London Stadium, Scamacca was rerouted back to Serie A with Atalanta the following season for around £27 million.
As was the case at West Ham, Scamacca’s time in Bergamo has been typified by unfilled promise, occasional technical brilliance and, crucially, injuries. Roma Press are leading reports in Italy that I Giallorossi could make a move for Scamacca, who played in the capital as an academy player, after securing Champions League football for the first time since 2019.
Gian Piero Gasperini and co are looking to pull on Scamacca’s heartstrings as a boyhood Roma supporter, and Italian reports are suggesting a deal is nearing completion for £30 million. For West Ham, this will be pleasant news, given that the club inserted a 10 per cent sell-on clause in the deal with Atalanta, according to Hammers News, which would net them £3 million. A minimal fee, but nothing to dismiss.
Atalanta could also target West Ham striker Valentín Castellanos as a replacement for Scamacca.
Roma also covets Crysencio Summerville
After the immediate success of Donyell Malen from Aston Villa, Roma are evidently eager to repeat their Premier League ventures. Malen’s countryman, Crysencio Summerville, has been heavily linked with a move to Serie A, with Roma looking to feast on West Ham’s relegation.
West Ham’s mercurial Dutch winger contributed to the seven goals in the season just gone, and was particularly sparkling in the final months of the campaign. Summerville’s performances earned him a spot in Ronald Koeman’s Netherlands 2026 World Cup squad.
The 24-year-old has three years left on the contract that he signed in August 2024 after joining from Leeds United. Whilst the Hammers will want to keep their top talents, especially those who would thrive in Championship play, Summerville could command a fee upwards of £30 million that would go a long way for the now-Championship club.
