  • West Ham United could be relegated on Sunday
  • A fire sale by the Hammers is expected in the summer
  • Kyle Walker-Peters won promotion from the Championship in 2024

Even though Kyle Walker-Peters has yet to sparkle in his time at West Ham United, the defender may wind up being one of the team’s key players if the Hammers fall to the Championship.

To combine with the necessary youth drive, West Ham will require seasoned, dependable players who can withstand the rigours of a demanding second-division campaign, given the uncertainty surrounding several senior players and rising concerns about a possible fire sale at the London Stadium.

Entering the final day this weekend, there’s a chance the majority of the squad will not be in East London when games kick back off in August. So, fine-picking the players worth keeping will be imperative for whoever is in charge next season – evaluating each player’s suitability, squad and market value.

Kyle Walker-Peters could be a cheat code in the Championship

Walker-Peters has already demonstrated that he is fully aware of what it takes to win the Championship. Before joining West Ham last summer, he was a vital member of Southampton’s promotion-winning team. He has the poise, adaptability, and reliability that might be quite useful in the second division.

Although Aaron Wan-Bissaka has frequently been the starting right-back this season, Walker-Peters has quietly put in a number of strong performances when called upon. In the event that West Ham is forced to make squad cuts after relegation, his versatility as a player on either full-back slot would also provide them with significant flexibility.

Given the club’s present financial difficulties, that flexibility may become essential. According to reports, West Ham would have to approve several exits if they end up in the Championship, as high earners and prized assets are expected to draw attention from other teams.

29-year-old Walker-Peters, on the other hand, seems like the kind of player who is more likely to stick around and aid in the rebuilding with his current deal running until June 2028.

The former Tottenham Hotspur half-back has previously battled through the gruelling Championship schedule and is aware of the mental and physical challenges at that level, unlike other West Ham players. A team that is anticipated to win 25+ games will benefit from his composure when in control and his attacking ability as a full-back.

There is also leadership value in players who have experienced both relegation battles and promotion pushes. West Ham’s squad has been subpar for most of this season, with a glaring lack of in-command leaders. One would expect Walker-Peters to be more of an authoritative figure. with a younger, hungrier squad.

Walker-Peters may not yet have made defining memories in claret and blue, but that may change swiftly if he stays with the club. In many respects, the Championship climate may fit him more than the upheaval surrounding West Ham’s current Premier League turmoil.
