- West Ham beat Everton 2-1 at the London Stadium
- The win keeps the Hammers out of the bottom three
- West Ham are two points above the relegation zone
West Ham United secure a massive three points as they beat Everton 2-1 at the London Stadium. Callum Wilson scored a stoppage time winner as the Hammers keep themselves out of the bottom three and above Tottenham Hotspur.
The 33-year-old scored against Everton for the ninth time in 12 games against them to get West Ham three points that are massive in the survival fight.
Tomas Soucek had given the Hammers the lead before Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall pegged them back in the latter stages of the game. When all looked lost, El Hadji Malick Diouf found Jarrod Bowen at the back post, who in turn found Wilson who did the rest.
First-half
In contrast to the second-half madness, the first was fairly tame, with neither side carving out a major opportunity.
Everton went closest as Thierno Barry shot low from 22 yards for Mads Hermansen to make a routine save. Other than that, the West Ham game was barely troubled.
The Hammers carried real threat through two players. Crysencio Summerville and Bowen were on it from the off, carrying the ball with purpose down either flank. Summerville twice found Bowen, but both his efforts were blocked by Vitaliy Mykolenko.
Summerville’s dribbling constantly caused Everton problems with James Garner and Jake O’Brien both having to commit fouls to stop the winger.
The game remained tight, with Dwight McNeil putting in a low cross that no Everton player could get on the end of.
Second-half
West Ham began the second-half like a different team. From minute one the Hammers were on top. Summerville picking up another foul in the opening exchanges.
Jordan Pickford was let off by VAR after he was ruled to not have fouled Valentin Castellanos when the referee had given the penalty on field. Seconds late the Everton goalkeeper was picking the ball out of his net as Soucek headed home Bowen’s corner to erupt the London Stadium.
Another VAR review followed as Bowen went down as he tried to shoot in the box. No penalty was given and West Ham went back to the job in hand.
David Moyes rang the changes and it woke the Toffees up. Soucek blocked Barry’s shot onto the bar before Axel Disasi stopped the follow up.
Nuno Espirito Santo followed suit and made his own changes with Freddie Potts and Callum Wilson coming on.
Five minutes later, Mateus Fernandes appeared to handle inside the Hammers box but no one picked it up, giving West Ham a let off.
It didn’t matter though, as Everton would find their equalizer. Mykolenko crossed, James Tarkowski headed down and Dewsbury-Hall buried. Despair.
Then, in added-time, just as it appeared the game was over, Diouf crossed, Bowen headed back and Wilson set the place alight smashing home the winner for Nuno’s Hammers.
With Spurs winning, the three points keeps West Ham above the bottom three in a huge win for the home team.
