- West Ham drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace
- The point takes the Hammers to two points above the drop zone
- Wolverhampton Wanderer are officially relegated to the Championship
West Ham United took another step in the Premier League survival fight as they drew 0-0 with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The Hammers may feel they should have won the game, given the chances they had but any point in the relegation scrap, is one gained. Konstantinos Mavropanos arguably had the best chance for West Ham, but made up for it as the defensive unit secured back-to-back clean sheets.
First-half
The Hammers made a bright start to the game, powering forward in a number of the opening exchanges. The home side would fight back, with Jorgen Strand-Larsen failing to convert Tyrick Mitchell’s cross.
Crysencio Summerville led the next attack, drifting inside and slotting in Pablo. The Brazilian then helped the ball to Valentin Castellanos who put his effort over the bar.
Brennan Johnson would then miss what is arguably a sitter as the ball missed Axel Disasi and landing on the Palace forward head in the penalty box. Johnson put the header wide.
Chris Richards almost sent a back pass straight to Castellanos but the forward could not control it.
Richards would make amends minutes later, blocking a Summerville shot who had been through on goal.
Chaos would ensue as the brake approached. Maxence Lacroix blocked an audacious overhead kick from Castellanos that came off Malick Dioufs lofted cross.
Nuno Espirito Santo’s team would push forward again. Diouf running down the wing to put a ball right on Mavropanos’s head, who could not guide the header past Dean Henderson.
Second-half
West Ham picked up where they left off in the second-half. Will Hughes blocking yet another Jarrod Bowen effort.
At the other end, Kyle Walker-Peters slid to to stop Johnson’s teasing delivery.
Mavropanos joined in the defensive effort, stepping up to stop Strand-Larsen from receiving another cross. Oliver Glasner would then ring the changes, introducing Jean-Phillippe Matete, Ismaila Sarr and Daichi Kamada on the hour mark.
The Hammers then had a chance to win it with Castellanos through on goal after a Jefferson Lerma slip, only for Jaydee Canvot to be exactly where he need to be.
The team’s traded chances before the host’s thought they had won it. Sarr slammed the ball into the back of the net after Mateta brought the ball down. Luckily for the Irons, Mateta did so with his arm.
West Ham leave Selhurst Park with a good point but will be wondering if this will be enough come the end of May.
