West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes believes the team are well set up for any challenge. The Hammers are unbeaten in their last three Premier League games, and head to Liverpool this weekend, on the back of a 0-0 draw with AFC Bournemouth.
After two defensively strong performances, the Portuguese midfielder believes his side have what it takes to get a result at Anfield. Liverpool have enjoyed more possession than any other Premier League side this season, whilst West Ham have had less than 50% in their last six games, something that Fernandes thinks will play into the away side’s hands.
“We focus on the next game now,” said Fernandes to the club’s official website. “We have had two days to forget about everything, try to relax, try to enjoy, then we go again for the next game against Liverpool.
“It will be tough, but every game is difficult here [in the Premier League], we already know, so we are ready for everything.
“We will play for the win, for the three points. Of course there are very good players there. We have our strength and we try to build on the things we can control, so we focus on our team, our things, and we believe we can win there.
“I think against these big teams, in my opinion, we play better because we have a very strong counter-attack.”
Mateus Fernandes finally hitting form at West Ham
Since moving to West Ham, Fernandes has taken his time to really show the Hammers faithful what he is all about. Changing managers and formation has hampered the midfielder settling it, but under Nuno Espirito Santo, the 21-year-old is putting in some solid performances.

Sitting a little deeper in midfield, Fernandes often partners Freddie Potts or Soungoutou Magassa. With a backline of Konstantinos Mavropanos and Axel Disasi, the playmaker is allowed to almost roam the deeper areas of midfield, controlling the tempo of the game and connecting the ball from defence to attack.
The role is seemingly brining the best out of Fernandes, with two assists and a goal in his last six Premier League games. The 21-year-old is becoming more and more integral to West Ham’s survival fight.
Difficult games to come for West Ham
Whilst this weekend’s trip to Liverpool will be a huge test for West Ham, the difficult games keep coming.
After the Reds, the Hammers head to Fulham. The game is one Nuno’s side will see as winnable, but Marco Silva’s team are coming off an impressive win over Sunderland.
The Irons return home to host Brentford in the FA Cup, before welcoming Manchester City, who are chasing Arsenal for the Premier League title this season, and just as in need of points as West Ham are.
