Former Premier League striker feels David Moyes is under pressure to quickly turn things around

Noel Whelan has suggested that the West Ham board will be keen for David Moyes to kickstart the club’s season sooner rather than later following a hefty outlay this summer.

The Hammers are currently inside the bottom three having suffered four defeats from their first six league games, off the back of spending around £160m in the recent transfer window.

Club record signing Lucas Paqueta was among the eight senior names brought to the club while £35.5m and £30m were spent on strengthening at both ends of the pitch as Gianluca Scamacca and Nayef Aguerd were both brought to the London Stadium but, after a slow start, Whelan insists that Moyes must gel his squad together quickly or risk facing the chop.

He told Football Insider: “They’ve had a slow start to the season, as have a number of teams.

“I think David Moyes would’ve expected a better start – but it just goes to show how competitive the Premier League is.

“No results are going to go your way just because you’ve spent big money – that’s not how it works.

“Moyes is going to have to earn his corn by turning this season around and bedding these new players in.

“It’s a results-driven business. It doesn’t matter what you’ve done in the past. The board will be piling the pressure on to get results.

“They’ll want West Ham in a position which reflects the amount of money spent. They’ll want things turned around very quickly.”

When Moyes was reappointed the Hammers’ boss in late December 2019 he signed an initial 18-month contract but after steadying the ship with the club finishing 16th having been one point off the relegation zone when he arrived the club have gone from strength to strength.

He led the side to a sixth-place finish in his first full season back in east London securing European football by virtue of league position for just the third time in the club’s history before finishing seventh last term.

He has certainly earned the right to be given time and it does seem extremely early for anyone to be talking about a sacking for the Scotsman although with the marquee arrivals this off-season you would expect the manager to turn the tide in the coming weeks.
