Pundits disagree over difficulty of West Ham’s Carabao Cup draw

Two icons of West Ham, Carlton Cold and Harry Redknapp, were in disagreement last night as they reacted to the Carabao Cup fourth round draw.

David Moyes’ side booked their place in the next round thanks to an early Manuel Lanzini goal against Manchester United.

After the match, Redknapp, a former Irons’ manager, was relatively pleased as he drew the Hammers at home before Micah Richards revealed cup-holders Manchester City as their opponents.

Don’t worry, the Hammers are at home. They’ll take the beating. I like the West Ham-Man City game, I think it has the making of a great game. West Ham are in great form and they will give Man City a great game, that’s for sure.

Back on pitchside at Old Trafford for Sky Sports, ex-West Ham striker Cole was less enamoured with the tie.

Knocked me right off my perch, I was really on a high,” he said. “All of a sudden I saw that… I don’t agree with Harry Redknapp, he said it’s going to be an entertaining game, but it isn’t. It’s going to be a hard game, that’s what it’s going to be.

There can be little doubt that cup draws don’t come much tougher.

Given all the resources Pep Guardiola has at his disposal, even a fully changed side can cause serious problems.

A saving grace for the Hammers is the home tie, giving the weight of home support to the east Londoners.

Having lifted this trophy on the last four occasions, the Irons will be all out to stop them from making it five in a row.

matchday.
