Former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has expressed his surprise at the ongoing contract situation facing West Ham stopper Lukasz Fabianski.
Speaking to Football Insider, the 41-year-old stated that the Hammers should be doing ‘everything they can’ in order to retain Fabianski as the Polish ‘keeper enters the final six months of his contract, saying:
”I think he’s a goalkeeper that has got better with age. When he was at Arsenal he had a lot of critics and he wasn’t the goalkeeper he is today. He’s developed so much during his time at West Ham. I’m surprised that West Ham have allowed him to go so deep into a contract without offering him a new one.”
The 35-year-old is now free to speak to foreign clubs over a potential summer switch, but the former Arsenal man recently told Polish radio station Weszlo FM that there was a “desire on both sides” to prolong his stay in east London.
Fabianski missed his first Premier League game of the season on Friday as he was injured in the warm-up prior to the Irons’ 1-0 victory over Everton.
READ WEST HAM VERDICT
We make Robinson bang on here. The experienced Fabianski has certainly improved with age after his turbulent time with Arsenal, establishing himself as emphatic first choice at both Swansea and West Ham in recent years.
In Fabianski’s absence last season, the Hammers’ goalkeeper situation was in dire straits. Whilst Darren Randolph has solved the backup stopper conundrum by keeping a clean sheet at Goodison Park, the 55-cap Polish international is undeniably the number one at the London Stadium and as such deserves an extended stay.
