West Ham club insider ExWHUEmployee has claimed that West Ham tried to sign Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud in January.
The Frenchman was linked with several clubs during the January window, including Newcastle, who reportedly had an offer for the striker rejected on transfer deadline day.
David Moyes could have really done with a striker, with £45 million summer acquisition Sebastien Haller only scoring six goals so far this season, with Swiss forward Albian Ajeti the only other forward at the club.
Speaking on the West Ham Way Podcast (Tuesday, February 4th), ExWHUEmployee revealed that the Hammers did have an interest in Giroud before the window closed.
There was some talk of going for Giroud, but things didn’t work out there.
Read West Ham’s verdict
With West Ham’s lack of depth up top, bringing in Giroud could have been a great move for the Hammers.
He would almsot certainly have been handed more game time at West Ham, with Giroud only making five appearances so far this season for Chelsea, with Tammy Abraham keeping him out the team.
The Frenchman could have brought a lot of experience to West Ham, and potentially could have been an inspiration for his fellow countryman Haller, potentially tutoring the player and allowing him to develop his game.
However, Giroud didn’t end up leaving Chelsea, but he could potentially be available in the summer when his contract expires.
West Ham should, in our opinion, look into a deal over the summer, with Giroud’s record of over 78 goals in the Premier League speaking for itself.
