Since joining West Ham United from Sion in 2016, Edmilison Fernandes was viewed as an exciting midfield prospect but things ultimately didn’t work out for him in England.
He spent the whole of last season on loan at Fiorentina and was sold to German club Mainz in the summer, but it’s his international performances that are catching the eye.
Switzerland beat the Republic of Ireland 2-0 on Tuesday night and plenty of Hammers fans singled out his showing as one to dwell over…

Twitter: @WestHamWaycouk Couldn’t agree more. Young, tall, can play multiple positions, never seemed to cause any problems attitude wise either. (@pastramitom)

Read West Ham’s verdict
Fernandes played a prominent role after his arrival under Slaven Bilic, but fell out of favour with David Moyes and didn’t have much of a chance under Manuel Pellegrini.
It was a shame to see him leave but it’s simply one of those where you have to trust the manager’s judgement; Manuel Pellegrini would have almost certainly had his reasons to offload him.
He’s still got age on his side at just 23, so hopefully he can kick on and fulfil his potential in Germany or elsewhere.
