West Ham United failed in a late summer pursuit of Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Victor Wanyama, and the former Southampton man could’ve been the perfect signing to finish off a productive transfer window.
According to the Daily Express, West Ham’s loan offer for Wanyama collapsed in the latter stages of the window, despite Spurs wanting to offload the Kenya international before the English deadline.
With the European transfer still open and Wanyama seeking a new challenge, it’s likely Manuel Pellegrini has missed out.
READ WEST HAM’S VERDICT
After making 22 appearances for Spurs last season, it was clear Mauricio Pochettino could still rely on his services; so if he’s still good enough for the Champions League finalists, he’d fit into the West Ham squad for sure.
Now 28 years old, Wanyama probably has one last big contract in him and a move across London could have been perfect for him, and perfect for the Hammers.
Although Pellegrini has said Carlos Sanchez is an important member of the squad, he hasn’t won over fans one bit and Wanyama would’ve been seen as an upgrade.
Declan Rice has cemented his place as the first-choice holding midfielder under Pellegrini, and rightly so, but when the fixtures start piling up the chances of him being unable to feature in every single outing is unlikely.
Irons fans’ wishes to sign a new holding midfielder are more of a cry for Sanchez to come good more than anything, so let’s hope he can.
