At the halfway stage of the season, West Ham are certainly much further down the table than they would have expected or wanted to be. Marooned in 17th with just a single point separating them from the relegation zone, Hammers fans are becoming increasingly angry at the lack of better quality football they were promised with the move to the London Stadium.
Their midfield has been extremely shaky on a number of occasions this season and the supporters’ patience in Mark Noble is wearing thinner by the match. With the January transfer window just a few days away, here are three midfielders that David Moyes should look to bring to East London next month. They have already had an £8 million bid for Harry Arter rejected by Bournemouth and the seasiders have said he is not for sale at any price.
Steven N’Zonzi, Sevilla
A player who is familiar with life in the Premier League after his six-year spell in England with Blackburn and Stoke will definitely sure up the West Ham midfield. Steven N’Zonzi has attracted plenty of interest from Europe’s top sides during his time at Sevilla but now he is the subject of transfer interest from the Hammers, who won’t be able to attract many better players than the 29-year-old.
N’Zonzi is reportedly looking to leave Spain and he is more than likely heading back to England with Everton and Arsenal also interested. Despite the love for the evergreen Mark Noble in the West Ham midfield, with his lacklustre performances during this campaign, there is no doubt that signing Steven N’Zonzi would be a massive upgrade. The two-time France international should be the Hammers’ first choice this January and would cost them in the region of £30 million.
Bryan Cristante, Atalanta
This is a player that isn’t very familiar to English sides but one that is being courted by several, including West Ham. Bryan Cristante is currently on loan at Atalanta in Serie A from Portuguese giants, Benfica and he has played excellently so far this season. This has led Benfica to slap a £22 million on his head despite the Italian side having the option to sign him for £4.5 million at the end of his loan spell. Even if the Hammers’ interest does result in a formal bid, he won’t be signed in time for their match against West Brom, which they are expected to win. Like N’Zonzi, this would bring stability to Moyes’ midfield, something that has been badly lacking this term. Cristante has showed that he can perform against English side as played a big part in his side’s 5-1 demolition of Everton in the Europa League, netting a brace during an all-action display earlier this term. He is very capable at all aspects of the game as the Italian can break up play, pass all over the park and score any kind of goal, something that can be seen on any online highlight reels.
John McGinn, Hibernian
John McGinn will be seen as the lowest priority out of the players on this list but the Hibernian midfielder would still slot into the team very well. With Nottingham Forest also pursuing the Scot, he isn’t in the same category as the two previously-mentioned players. At just 23, he still has plenty of maturing to do and could grow into a brilliant top-flight player if given enough time on the pitch at the London Stadium.
He is enjoying another good season in the Scottish Premier League and is supposedly very open to the possibility of a move south of the border. West Ham would be a more exciting prospect but a move to the East Midlands would ensure more game time. There are certainly a few better central midfield options with the money the Hammers have at their disposal but McGinn is a very decent player and would still strengthen David Moyes’ side.
