West Ham failed to hang on for a point at Southampton, with the ten-man Hammers side falling to a 3-2 defeat.
West Ham’s dreadful start to the season had another nightmare start as Gabbiadini finished Southampton’s 500-minute goal drought after just 11 minutes when he slotted home past Joe Hart.
The day got even worse for West Ham when record signing Marko Arnautović got himself sent off after an elbow on Southampton defender Stephens. Just a few minutes later Fonte gave away a penalty and Tadic stepped up for the hosts. He slotted the ball passed Joe Hart to double Saints’ lead. West Ham pulled one back just before half time when Hernández finished from close range after Antonio’s shot was parried.
Hernández scored his second in the second half after substitute Sakho’s header hit the cross bar and the Mexican was quickest to react. However, heartbreak followed at the end as Zabaleta gave away a soft penalty and Charlie Austin converted the penalty with a minute to go.
