Exclusive: Joe Powell on all things West Ham

While the senior squad are putting in the hard yards in Europe as they go through the paces in pre-season working towards the start of the 2017/18 campaign in three weeks time, the U23 side are at home undergoing their own pre-season ahead of a big season of their own.

With already three games under their belts, the most recent of which being a 2-1 win away against Dagenham and Redbridge, the U23 squad are preparing well and young midfielder Joe Powell is set to have a big role in the side next season.

The 18-year-old signed a new three-year contract with the club last summer and featured regularly for the U23s last season, including featuring in both legs of West Ham’s PL2 play-off legs against Newcastle.

Looking at building on a great campaign last season, Powell is regarded as one of the brightest young talents in the academy right now and we were fortunate enough to grab a word with the player after the win at Dagenham and Redbridge about him, his career so far and his aspirations for the future.

How has this pre season been different to other pre seasons?

I believe this pre-season we have had a much younger side overall but putti that into consideration I think the team have dealt with the challenges well. The staff have been fully committed to the young team and certainly gave everyone an opportunity to impress.

What would you say your best position is and who do you base your game on?

I like to play inside the pitch and create things. However, I like to think I can use my delivery as a weapon so I like playing out wide too. It’s hard to choose between the two. I really look up to Lanzini.

What player did you look up to when you were growing up?

I’ve always loved Beckham, he’s technically unbelievable, he has desire and a vey humble personality. Another one would have to be Noble. As a local boy myself I look up to him and his success.

Who is the best player you’ve faced so far in your career?

Well we once played against Argentina’s full international squad as they trained at Rush Green because they had a game a few days later against Croatia at Upton Park. So to think I shared the same pitch as Messi, Tevez, Pastore and much more talent is amazing.

Do you have any match day routines or superstitions that you follow?

It may sound very superstitious but I always dress my right leg before my left. Also as I get on the pitch I kiss my right shin pad as it has a picture of my nephew on there and I like to think he can bring me luck!

What are your main personal objectives for the upcoming season?

I would love to just start and play games week in week out. I would like to get a look in with the first team but only my performances can enhance my chances of that. Also to get 15+ game impacting moments.

Have you had any offers to leave the club on loan or do you plan to stay with West Ham for the season?

A loan deal can only adapt my knowledge and experience on the game, which is the same for every player. However I’m happy at West Ham and plan to stay here.
