We went into the January window with two clear problem areas that needed addressing: the right-back slot and the addition of a dependable striker; neither of which were taken care of.
The failure to sign a right-back has already resulted in dropping at least four points, with Cheikhou Kouyate exposed against both West Brom and Watford, resulting in the concession of two key goals.
The right side of defence has needed to be addressed practically since we returned to the Premier League, not allowing for a somewhat decent season from Joey O’Brien in 2012/13, and yet still, over eight windows later, it has still yet to be seen to.
If we start next season having still not found a long term option, it’ll be encroaching on negligence from the board, and raise further questions about the footballing acumen of David Sullivan.
Here are several reasons why West Ham should’ve signed a right-back in January and how it’d be benefitting us today.
