The recent situation at West Ham has really made me consider what it is that I think of when I think of West Ham. I’ve been a fan for about 11 years now and I’ve always thought of West Ham as a passionate club. It’s always seemed a real honour for a player to put on the shirt, the Claret and Blue is more than just a colour. It reminds people of all of the history of our great club.
Now since the move, as we all know, things haven’t been great. We were promised a world-class team, a 20-goal-a-season striker and European ambitions. Unfortunately, the board have not been able to follow through with these promises and this is where it has all stemmed from in my opinion.
Dimitri Payet signed a new deal with West Ham back in February a following a stellar Euros with France his head was turned by the allures of some of Europe’s elite. The club managed to persuade him to stay put with the promise of some big-name additions to the squad as well as a Europa League run. Of course as we all know that didn’t happen however what I don’t understand is, why does he have the right to complain and moan when the others aren’t?
Dimitri Payet was frozen out of the France squad before coming to West Ham and enjoying arguably the best spell of his career, dazzling fans and pundits alike in the best league in the world and was recognised globally as a great player, however now it seems as though he thinks he’s bigger than the club.
As I said previously, West Ham have had a bad start to the season. Many players have seemed to be lacking passion and dedication to the club however they’re getting on with it. For example, Havard Nordtveit. He signed in the summer from Monchengladbach. He hasn’t has it easy since joining as he’s been forced to play out of position, however, after being booed at a recent home game I have seen an improvement in his game and although things haven’t gone well for him, he’s giving 100% every week to try and get the fans back on his side and prove his worth.
It seems as if Payet has been tempted by an offer from Marseille, as the limelight has turned to him after some ‘bad’ performances it seems as if he wants to run away and escape. This isn’t good enough, we see players like Winston Reid and Mark Noble give it their all every game and still sometimes get criticised, they move onto the next week and go through it all again, and why? Because they love what they do and love playing for West Ham. Payet doesn’t have the right to run away after one bad spell.
I feel as though the board are partly to blame for not keeping their promises however I can’t help but ask, why does Payet get to sulk when no one else can? I don’t want a player at my club that doesn’t want to play.
Thanks for the memories, Dimi, but you’re no longer worth my time.
