Hits and Misses: West Ham’s best and worst Argentinians

Argentina seems to produce generation after generation of exceptionally talented footballers. After worshipping the likes of Diego Maradona for magical displays, the Argentinian fans moved on to Hernan Crespo, Gabriel Batistuta and Javier Zanetti. These days some of the world’s most talented footballers come out of the South American country: Lionel Messi, Gonzalo Higuain and Sergio Aguero to name a few.

West Ham have recently completed the loan signing of Jonathan Calleri from Deportivo Maldonado with an option to make the deal permanent if he impresses. The young Argentinian striker recently represented his country at the 2016 Olympics and arrives at West Ham as a very highly rated prospect.

The 22-year-old became the seventh Argentinian player to wear the famous Claret and Blue when he made his debut for the Hammers against Astra. He looked promising too when he came on against Bournemouth but if we are judging him on the performances of the other six then we cannot predict how he will turn out. These six are polarised symmetrically into three hits and three misses.

This article looks back at our previous Argentinians and assesses how good they were during their time in East London.
