West Ham transfer targets: To buy or not to buy

With the transfer deadline day looming, West Ham are still desperately searching for much needed reinforcements. With several targets being touted in the last few days, which targets are actually looking like joining Bilic’s team before the 6pm deadline on September 1st?

Alex Song

Still we wait for confirmation but the chances of Alex Song returning to West Ham, after last season’s loan spell, remain high. He’s been pictured arriving for a medical, which he reportedly failed as he is recovering from an ankle injury, but you would expect the deal to still go through by the time the transfer window closes.

Deal completion: Highly likely

Adnan Januzaj

Rumours are spreading that should Manchester United bring in another attack-minded player then they would look to loan out the talented Belgian. However, since The Red Devils seem determined to try and grab unrealistic and impossible targets, like Gareth Bale and Neymar, Januzaj looks like he will be staying in Manchester for the time being. Unless they re-adjust their transfer strategy, this will not be coming to fruition.

Deal completion: Highly unlikely

Victor Moses

Since the team doesn’t seem to have any width, the addition of a winger has suddenly become a priority. Victor
Moses looks to be top of the wanted list at West Ham and, since Chelsea have now signed Pedro, he finds himself slipping down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge. The Nigerian international has bags of experience, playing for Wigan, Chelsea, Liverpool and Stoke in the Premier League. The main issue with this deal is the asking price and the fact that Tottenham are reportedly interested also.

Aaron Lennon

Plenty of pace and an experienced winger. Lennon has not been given a squad number at Tottenham and his days
appear to be numbered. You would think this would be a perfect deal except for one thing. He’s at Spurs and they do not like us. Remember Adebayor last transfer window? This rests on exactly what type of mood Daniel Levy is in.

Deal completion: No chance

Juan Iturbe

Having joined Roma last year, the young winger has bags of potential. However, he seems to be out of favour for the time being with Roma boss Rudi Garcia. The signings of Mohamed Salah and Iago Falque also don’t bode well for the Argentine’s playing chances. So could a loan deal be on the cards? West Ham have been exploring the prospect but face competition from Everton.

Deal completion: Unlikely

Gervinho

Another winger at Roma who looked as if he was leaving the club earlier in the window, well, that was until he demanded a helicopter and a private beach. He began his career in Serie A very well following his spell at Arsenal but his performances have stagnated somewhat. Still involved in the first team setup though and isn’t high on the West Ham priority list.

Deal completion: Highly unlikely

Michail Antonio

The Nottingham Forest winger is a target that has recently been mentioned in the press. The winger has scored
three goals in four appearances this season and Derby failed with a bid for him earlier in the window, as Forest didn’t want to sell to a rival. West Ham are also reportedly planning to use Matt Jarvis as a makeweight in the deal.

Simone Zaza

It has been widely reported that Juventus striker Zaza was the forward most likely to join the club. The Hammers
had agreed a loan deal, with an option to buy, but a stumbling block has been hit recently. With Zaza fourth in the pecking order at Juventus, Fernando Llorente’s move to Sevilla has raised Zaza’s profile at the club and he is reassessing the situation. Still a deal that is quite advanced and should probably still go through by the end of this window.

Deal completion: No chance

Emmanuel Adebayor

Tried in the last window and failed. The Togolese striker remains a target in this window though Aston Villa
is probably a more realistic destination for him. Has plenty of experience but his form switches from sublime to abysmal at the touch of a button. In a similar vein to the Aaron Lennon deal, it all depends on how Tottenham feel
about doing business with us.

Deal completion: Likely

Burak Yilmaz

Two bids from West Ham for the Galatasaray striker, two rejections. It’s clear that Yilmaz is sought after by
the club but Galatasaray are adamant that they do not want the striker to leave. Of course every player has his price, but that price may be too high for a 30-year old who has never played outside of Turkey.

Deal completion: Unlikely

Javier Hernandez

Looked like this could happen earlier in the window until Manchester United got rid of all their other
strikers. Just like Januzaj they will not allow Hernandez to leave unless another forward comes in. If Manchester United sign someone in the meantime then this deal could soon become a reality once again. At the moment though it doesn’t look too likely.

Deal completion: Possible
