Reece Oxford produced one of the stand-out performances of the weekend, as he foiled all three of Arsenal’s playmakers on multiple occasions in a historic victory for the Hammers.
According to Sam Cunningham of the Daily Mail, Oxford is ‘passing tests’ and proving a point to his previous doubters. One of those doubters was ironically Arsenal, who had told him that he couldn’t cut it as a footballer and should look at other career options.
Arsenal’s academy director Andries Jonker said to Oxford that he would never make the grade at the Emirates before he broke into the West Ham first-team.
The 16-Year old, who went to the same school as Blackpool player Nile Ranger, was also released by Tottenham before joining his boyhood club West Ham United. He holds a lot of praise for the team, he said of the club:
‘‘The set-up at West Ham is great, The Youth Academy like to push the players. West Ham have been giving players chances. There’s a lot of players coming through.’
Oxford will likely ‘be protected’ by Slaven Bilic, but expect him to make more performances in the coming weeks as he produced one of the most impressive debuts in the Premier League’s recent history.
The former Tottenham youngster is collecting his GCSE results next week, he will be hoping they go just as successful as his standout performance at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.
Clubs such as Arsenal and Tottenham may regret passing up on him, especially if he continues to show such composure and power on the pitch.
