West Ham manager Slaven Bilic could soon be reunited with Croatian striker Nikica Jelavic, according to Graeme Bailey of HITC.
The rumours come following injuries to West Ham forwards Enner Valencia and Andy Carroll, both of whom stand to miss the opening weeks of the season. With Bilic favouring Mauro Zarate in a wide position, Diafra Sakho and Modibo Maiga now remain the only fit striking options available to the club. Whilst it is widely reported that Javier Hernandez is the Hammer’s first-choice of replacement, Nikica Jelavic is now believed to be Bilic’s preferred alternative should the East London side fail in their bid to sign the Mexican international.
The move would see the 29-year old Croat return to the Premier League following his relegation with Hull City in the 2014/15 season. With a moderate return of just 13 goals in 42 league appearances, Jelavic would likely be second-choice to fan favourite and Senegalese strike-sensation Diafra Sakho. The Croatian also spent three seasons with Everton, netting 21 times over a total of 69 appearances for the Merseyside club.
With his vast experience of the Premier League it is unlikely that Hull City would be able to retain the player’s services should West Ham come knocking. Bilic’s time managing the Croatian national team and the possibility of a reunion between the two countryman would only serve to increase the Hammer’s chances. Jelavic has made a total of 36 senior appearances with Croatia, scoring 6 goals for the side currently sitting 14th in the FIFA world rankings.
