The West Ham squad rebuild now needs to move from patience to urgency. The 0-0 draw against Rangers did not define Nuno Espírito Santo’s side, but it exposed an unbalanced group which still lacks mobility, creativity and reliable depth.
Supporters have accepted the need to reshape the squad following relegation and several major departures. However, competitive football is approaching, and Nuno still cannot select a balanced starting side without using players outside their strongest positions.
West Ham defended with discipline at Ibrox. Mads Hermansen made several important saves, while Konstantinos Mavropanos and Max Kilman helped preserve a clean sheet. The official West Ham match report also reflected Rangers’ greater attacking threat.

The greatest concern came through midfield. Rangers repeatedly pressed Mohamadou Kanté and Keiber Lamadrid, preventing West Ham from progressing possession with any control.
James Ward-Prowse started from the left despite offering his best qualities centrally. Lamadrid and Kanté also looked uncomfortable within the midfield structure.
Claret & Hugh’s assessment described West Ham as short of a player capable of holding possession and linking their play. It also highlighted the wider lack of speed across Nuno’s team.
West Ham do not simply need players who run quickly. They need faster decisions, sharper movement and more confidence when receiving under pressure.
The late introductions of George Earthy, Lewis Orford, Freddie Potts and Josh Ajala increased the tempo. However, academy players should complement a promotion-chasing team rather than carry its creative burden.
Our immediate analysis of the Rangers draw identified central midfield and wide attack as the two clearest weaknesses. Crysencio Summerville’s departure has removed West Ham’s most natural ball-carrier, leaving Jarrod Bowen as the only proven attacker who consistently unsettles defenders.
Four positions Nuno still needs to strengthen
A controlling midfielder must become the main priority. Nuno needs someone who can receive the ball under pressure and move West Ham through the centre of the pitch.
A left winger is equally important. The current squad lacks a player who can isolate a full-back, carry possession forward and create space for Taty Castellanos.
Another striker would provide competition and reduce the reliance on Castellanos and Bowen. Pablo has not yet provided enough evidence that he can become a dependable Championship option.
West Ham also continue to explore defensive reinforcements. Their reported interest in Leicester City centre-back Harry Souttar could add physical presence and depth, although the Hammers currently favour a loan agreement.
The West Ham squad rebuild does not require a collection of expensive names. It requires players with the correct attributes for Nuno’s system and the demands of a Championship promotion campaign.
Supporters have remained patient through the sales and wider changes. That patience could disappear quickly if West Ham begin the season with the same imbalance seen at Ibrox.
