Spurs Turn to Former West Ham Defender in Bid to Avoid Relegation Drop

This Premier League season has been marked by constant changes on the touchline. Clubs are reacting quickly when results fall short, often replacing managers in an attempt to regain control. Manchester United is one of the clearer examples. Michael Carrick stepped in at the start of the year, yet the decision has not convinced everyone. Former players, including Teddy Sheringham, have questioned the move, with some openly backing Roy Keane as a stronger alternative.

A similar pattern is now unfolding at Tottenham. The brief spell under Igor Tudor has not delivered the turnaround the club needed, and the pressure has returned quickly. With results still uncertain and the table tightening, Spurs are once again looking at a change. This time, attention has shifted toward a familiar figure, a former West Ham defender, as the club searches for a way to steady the situation and avoid slipping further.

Spurs Now Playing for Survival

Tottenham have reached a point where the situation can no longer be managed gradually. The table reflects it clearly. They are sitting just above the relegation line, with very little separating them from the teams below. Performances have not improved, and confidence across the squad looks fragile.

Igor Tudor was brought in to steady things quickly. His track record suggested he could organise a team quickly and pick up points when needed. That turnaround has not happened.

With only a handful of games left, every match now carries real consequences. The international break has given the club a moment to step back and reassess. Reports of a possible mutual separation with Tudor show how serious the situation has become. There is little time left to correct the course.

Hughton’s Name Gains Momentum

Chris Hughton has emerged as a realistic option because of what he brings immediately. His connection to Tottenham is well known. He spent years at the club as both a player and part of the coaching staff, and that familiarity matters in a situation where there is no time for adjustment.

He understands how the club operates and would not need time to settle into the environment. That is a key factor right now. Spurs need someone who can step in and work with what is already there, without adding more disruption.
His past at West Ham adds another angle. While it does not change the task in front of him, it brings attention, given the position both clubs find themselves in. A decision like this always carries wider implications when teams are close in the standings.

Experience in Tight Situations

Hughton’s career has often involved working under pressure. At Newcastle and Brighton, he dealt with squads that needed structure more than long-term rebuilding. His approach has usually been straightforward: organise the team, keep things disciplined, and focus on getting results.

That style fits what Tottenham need right now. There is no space for experimentation. The priority is to stabilise performances and collect enough points to avoid the bottom three.

His time with Ghana also adds to that experience. Working at an international level requires quick adjustments and clear communication, especially when time with players is limited. Those skills translate well to situations where immediate impact is required.

No Room Left for Delay

Tottenham are no longer dealing with a slow decline; they are in a race to avoid falling further. The next few matches will determine the season’s outcome.

A managerial change does not guarantee results, but it can quickly alter direction if handled correctly. The focus now is on finding someone who can bring structure and clarity without needing time to rebuild.
There is little margin left. Every decision from this point carries weight, and the consequences will be clear before the season ends.
