West Ham United will have five players at the World Cup this summer, with the majority of them expected to leave the club in this window. Following relegation from the Premier League, the Hammers have to raise £150 million, before they can build a squad capable of fighting for promotion.

One of the players who will not be going to North America this summer, is West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen. Despite being in England boss Thomas Tuchel’s last two camps, the 29-year-old was not selected in the 26-man Three Lions for the tournament.

Gordon Strachan believes Jarrod Bowen should have been picked by England

Former Scotland boss, Gordon Strachan believes England have made a mistake by not taking Bowen.

“There are players, I find it strange they can’t get into the squad,” Strachan said. “Even Rashford, it’s not as if he’s playing wonderful football.

“You only see glimpses of him taking free-kicks. If you can’t score for Barcelona, you can’t score for anyone.

“There are others like Bowen for West Ham —fantastic. When the going gets tough, he’s there all the time. He’s done enough to get in that squad as well.”

Despite it not being one of his best season’s in a West Ham shirt, Bowen still sat near the top of the table for goal involvements. In fact, the only Englishman to out-do the 29-year-old in the category in the Premier League was Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White, who was another omission from Tuchel.

Bowen is now at a crossroads in his career. It had been his dream to represent England at a World Cup, a door that has now closed.

The Hammers would like to retain their captain, but most know that Bowen’s international career will be put on hold if he chooses not to return to the Premier League with another side.
