- West Ham United went undefeated throughout the month of April
- Jarrod Bowen and Konstantinos Mavropanos lost out to Morgan Gibbs-White for April’s Player of the Month
- Manager Nuno Espirito Santo was also pipped
Despite an unbeaten April, West Ham United’s nominated personnel were unable to collect any of the latest Premier League monthly awards.
The Hammers won two of their only three league games in the mid-spring month; however, the contributions of Jarrod Bowen, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Nuno Espirito Santo were beaten.
Bowen and Mavropanos fell short of winning the Premier League’s April Player of the Month award, which went to Morgan Gibbs-White instead.
The Premier League revealed on Friday that Gibbs-White had won the award for the first time in his career, following an influential month. In just three games, the attacking midfielder scored four goals and assisted once, including a hat-trick against Burnley.
Despite strong competition, both Bowen and Mavropanos were passed over after being selected among eight finalists. Bowen, who has helped spearhead the team through their ongoing relegation fight, contributed four assists last month. Meanwhile, Mavropanos shined on both sides of the ball, scoring twice against Wolverhampton Wanders and contributing to two clean sheets.
Not only did West Ham players miss out on individual honours. Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola won the Manager of the Month award over Nuno Espirito Santo.
Guardiola won the award after leading City to three consecutive wins in April, including triumphs against Arsenal, Chelsea, and Burnley. The award is his 13th Manager of the Month recognition, further solidifying his status among the most decorated managers in Premier League history.
Nuno was nominated following West Ham’s improved play, but he was unable to equal Guardiola’s spotless record during the month, with just two wins and a 0-0 draw at Crytsal Palace.
What’s next for West Ham?
While the Hammers will be frustrated that both their players and manager have missed out on silverware, the nominations underscore Bowen, Mavropanos, and Nuno’s evident impact as the team fights for Premier League survival in the closing weeks of the season.
West Ham are next in action on Sunday against Arsenal at the London Stadium, where anything other than a result could be decisive in their dwindling fight for Premier League survival.
