- West Ham beat Everton 2-1 on Saturday
- The three points keep the Hammers out of the bottom three
- Callum Wilson scored the winning goal
West Ham United beat Everton 2-1 in a huge game in the Premier League survival fight. The Hammers look set to drop into the bottom three before substitute Callum Wilson popped up to net the winner deep into stoppage time.
The three points keeps West Ham above Tottenham Hotspur, who beat Wolverhampton Wanderers. The gap remains two points and keeps the Irons destiny in their own hands with four games to go.
Wilson, who got the all-important goal, told the club’s official website just how delighted he was to find the back of the net.
“The most important thing is obviously the three points, but of course I’m delighted to get on the scoresheet, and in the manner that it happened as well,” Wilson said.
“I’ve made a bit of a habit of scoring goals in the six-yard box during my career, and I think it came down to a bit of experience in that position. It’s easy to put it over the bar, and it wasn’t the cleanest strike, but you’ve got to concentrate on hitting it down, because the goalie can use his hands and there were people on the line.
“I was just concentrating on hitting the back of the net, and it was great to see it go in. There was a perhaps a bit of relief and frustration in there, but getting the win in that sort of manner always feels good.
“Of course, it would’ve been good if we didn’t need that drama, and hadn’t conceded so late like we did, but it all worked out in the end today and to be able to share that moment with the fans was fantastic.”
Togetherness breeding confidence at West Ham
Wilson is part of what has brought this West Ham team together. The 33-year-old has had plenty of lows in his short Hammers career and yet is still a huge part of this team and has had hugely important moments.
The former Newcastle United striker has said this is what makes the team so strong, no matter who you are, you are important to the team and we are together in this fight.
“Overall we’ve shown the togetherness and the fight to come back from the setback of conceding late, go up the other end and do what we needed to do. We know we need to fight in every game, and that’s what we’re doing.
“There are a lot of different personalities in this squad, but it’s being about one. That togetherness breeds confidence, and now we’ve got a platform to keep building from, and that’s what we’ll continue to try to do.”
Spurs took care of their business at Wolves but West Ham remain in control of their Premier League future.
“Tottenham took care of their result as well as us, so we go into next week the same way and we keep building on what we’re working on.
“All I can do is keep working, and helping the team. Like I said we’re all together, we’re in it as one, and we’ll give everything we can in each game to get the job done.”
