West Ham United lost 5-2 to Liverpool with missed chances being another part of the story once again. Nuno Espirito Santo’s team played well in spells, scoring twice at Anfield, but were out done by the clinical finishing of Liverpool’s attackers.
Tomas Soucek netted the first of West Ham’s two goals but acknowledged the team needs to do more in front of goal. Despite this, the midfielder admitted to the club’s official website that the result was hard to take:
“It’s so difficult to take because the result looked so bad, but I think the performance was so different,
“I have to start with the first half and three goals from the set-pieces. That shouldn’t happen, and that’s what killed us because I think we scored two goals, but we could have scored even five.
“At Anfield it’s always difficult, but we came here very well prepared and we have the momentum in the training ground and we believe we can take some points here, but obviously it’s not [happened for us] today. But I believe we can take also so many positives and we know that on Wednesday [at Fulham] now is the big one for us.
“Some days it’s not going well and everything is going against you, so even though we had a couple of chances, it could be 4-3 at one moment or we could be so close again, but it didn’t go well for us.
“We can take individual performances and how we went for it, how we fought until the end, even if it was a difficult result. So I take this very positively for the guys, and I believe we are ready, we are in the fight to [clear the relegation zone], and we want to be out, and that’s our goal and I believe that even this game can only help us.”
40 Premier League goals for Soucek
Soucek’s goal on Saturday was his 40th in the Premier League for the West Ham. The midfielder has a knack of picking up important goals for the Hammers and knows he needs to keep that up in the run in.
“As a player I am always happy with the goals and today I can have some nice moments from Anfield, but I always think about the results and about the points and that’s not [happened] today, so at the end I’m disappointed,” he confirmed, before praising the travelling West Ham fans for their support throughout at Anfield.
“I have to say thank you to the fans, because they are amazing. Liverpool is so far away and they were amazing, so I just hope they will be the same on Wednesday [at Fulham], because we really need them and we will fight as West Ham United.”
