“Accept that responsibility”: West Ham captain issues rallying cry ahead of Liverpool clash

West Ham United take on Liverpool tomorrow sitting just two points from safety. The Hammers have seen an upturn in form over the last month, with Nuno Espirito Santo and Paco Jemez overseeing a defensive restructure that has worked wonders.

West Ham find themselves in their current predicament due to an awful first-half of the season, that saw Graham Potter replaced with Nuno. Results did not immediately pick up with the change at the helm, and only now are the Hammers seeing their hard work come to fruition.

Not one to shy away from criticism, captain Jarrod Bowen has admitted difficult conversations have had to be had. Speaking to the club’s official website, the 29-year-old said everyone need’s to continue stepping up, if West Ham are to complete survival:

“We’ve all got to continue stepping up, that’s the situation that we find ourselves in,” said Bowen, who will lead his team out to face Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday knowing a win will lift the Irons out of the bottom three.

“We know outside noise happens and, I think it’s individually, for one, how you deal with that, but certainly as a group we can take criticism from each other and I think it’s an important time to be criticising each other.

“In the situation that we’re in, we need everyone pointing fingers and people to accept that responsibility, which we’re doing. I think we’ve seen a change certainly in the last few weeks.

“It’s not easy, don’t get me wrong. It’s not easy, and that’s not an excuse, because this is where we find ourselves from what we’ve done at the start of the season, so now we have to fight our way out of it, and we’ve certainly got enough, not just talking about quality, but talking about characters and people who are grabbing each other by the scruff of the neck when times are tough.

“It needs to be like that, and that’s certainly a pleasing thing in a changing room, when you can look at your teammate next to you and go, yeah, he’s got my back and I’ve got his back.”

Jarrod Bowen’s difficult season

By his own admission, Bowen would admit this has been one of his most difficult season’s in a West Ham shirt. The winger/forward has struggled to find the net this campaign with some of his performances not hitting the standard most are used to seeing.

Whilst the West Ham captain wants to be more accurate in front of net, his games have been improving alongside the upturn in form for the Hammers. Bowen has scored two goals in his list five, but knows he needs to add more.

As West Ham head to Liverpool tomorrow, the captains will be hoping to once again show his worth, as Nuno’s men look to finally turn the tide on their season.
