Champions League winning defender backs West Ham to stay up

West Ham United are the form team of the bottom three, sitting just two points from safety. Nuno Espirito Santo’s team have enjoyed an upturn in for, but have a long way to go if they want to ensure their survival this season.

With former Hammer, Joe Cole, already backing West Ham to do the business, one of the midfielder’s former teammates has wade in. Chelsea stalwart, John Terry has stated he thinks the Irons can stay up this season, stating on the Double Top’s podcast that Nuno’s team has the tools to do so:

“I think West Ham will stay up, I do yeah.

“Genuinely, I think West Ham will stay up.”

When asked who will be relegated, Terry added: “Wolves, Burnley and Forest are in trouble I think.”

Pundit’s backing West Ham

Terry and Cole join the likes of Alan Shearer, Sam Allardyce and Harry Redknapp in saying they believe West Ham will be the team to stay up this season. The verdicts of pundits is likely to be based on the Hammers form.

Nuno’s side are one of the in form teams in the whole of the Premier League, not just the bottom half of the table. The Irons have improved remarkedly on defence, amassing 11 points over their last six games, winning three, drawing two and losing just once.

Only AFC Bournemouth, Manchester City, Chelsea, Manchester United and table-toppers Arsenal have amassed more points in that time. West Ham are firmly on a good run, one that need’s to keep going if they want to get out of their current situation.

The situation

West Ham are two points from safety after their 0-0 draw with Bournemouth on Saturday. The Hammers were done a favour last Sunday, as Liverpool beat Nottingham Forest with a late goal.

The Irons now take on the Red’s themselves, heading to Anfield for a Saturday afternoon kick off. Nuno has a good recent record against Liverpool, and will need to use his experience to orchestrate a result on Merseyside.

Forest, head to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday. Any sort of result on Saturday for West Ham, would put real pressure on their closest Premier League rivals.

Following their game with Liverpool, the Hammers have a shorter away trip to Fulham. The team will remain in the Capital for an FA Cup matchup with Brentford, before they return to Premier League action by hosting Manchester City.
