West Ham United’s Lukasz Fabianski rejoined the club in September of 2025. The now 40-year-old had been a stalwart at the club, making over 200 appearances for the club, and couldn’t turn down the chance to return when the Hammers called.
Speaking to media in his native Poland, Fabianski has revealed that Everton made a move for him in the summer. The Toffee’s are managed by former West Ham boss David Moyes and was first choice for much of the manager’s time in London.
“I had several offers, from Everton for a second-choice goalkeeper, and there was an enquiry from Legia, and I had various conversations,” he said.
“However, my family and I decided we didn’t want to move. I remember a conversation last season with my family and people at West Ham. I assumed I’d play one more season and then say goodbye. Last summer changed my mind somewhat.”
The goalkeeper also admitted their had been conversations over an extension, with his deal up at the end of the season, but that him and his families priorities had changes.
“We have different priorities now. January was very busy for us in terms of transfer activity. We have to wait until the very end of the season, then we’ll have a better idea of where we’re going.”
West Ham’s goalkeeping situation
West Ham currently have three senior goalkeepers on their books this season. Mads Hermanson joined in a £20m deal and began the season as number one. His time in the starting line-up was short lived as managerial changes were made, but the Dane has now returned to the starting setup, and looks at home in the business end of the season.
Alphonse Areola has been the Hammers starter for the last four season’s but inconsistent performances has seen him drop out of the XI. The French shot stopper is one of the club’s highest earners, and despite some excellent games over the years, looks set to move on in the summer.
Alphonse Areola’s 2025/26 West Ham United statistics
| Appearances | Clean Sheets | Assists |
| 22 | 2 | 1 |
Wes Foderingham left the club for Cyprus in September, opening the door for Fabianski to return, on a deal until the end of the season. The Pole is yet to make an appearance this season but his experience in the dressing room will be key as West Ham look to stay up this season.
West Ham’s defensive issues
West Ham have one of the worst defensive record in the Premier League this season. There’s no sugar coating it, it’s a huge part of why the Hammers are in relegation trouble this season. The only team’s to have conceded more goals than the team, are the two teams below them in the table.
With Areola dropped, Hermanson has started the last two league games, conceding just one goal, and that was sublime finish from Manchester United’s Benjamin Sesko.
Nuno knows that he had a lot of work to do defensively, but with a new choice of keeper, West Ham look on the right track. Whether it’s too little, too late, time will tell.
