Ahead of tonight’s Europa Conference League clash against Danish Superliga side Silkeborg, West Ham have been dealt a triple setback.
Taking to the pre-match press conference on Wednesday, Irons boss David Moyes spoke on the injury status of three stars in particular, when prompted on the availability of his options.
The likes of Maxwel Cornet, Craig Dawson and Lucas Paqueta were the three names that came up, with Moyes’ update not as hopeful as fans would have liked heading into this clash.
Speaking to the media, as per football.london, Moyes said: “Cornet has had a small setback in training so Cornet is not available and I don’t know if it’s another week or another couple of weeks but it’s another setback for Cornet.
“Daws is improving but is not fit for the game, not fit at the moment. Paqueta is not available because of his collarbone to make it simple. But, hopefully, they are not too far away.”
A triple setback
It has been a tough start to the season for Moyes, who has not yet had his best squad at his disposal, with what seems to be a never-ending amount of injuries.
In this run-in of a game every three days due to the placement of the World Cup, the 59-year-old will be counting on all of his squad to get the club through this condensed schedule, so sustaining setbacks to a key first-team trio will come as a big blow to the boss.
The silver-lining in this latest update is that the latter two, Dawson and Paqueta, should return to action pretty promptly.
But the update involving Cornet will come as a further blow to a star who was on the cusp of regular first-team minutes at the London Stadium.
The trio will miss tonight’s affair, but Moyes will be hoping for an injury boost ahead of the World Cup break.
