Former Premier League defender Alan Hutton has admitted to being ‘surprised’ by West Ham ace Declan Rice.
The 23-year-old continues to develop a well-rounded game in the heart of the Hammers’ midfield and has added an extra attacking impetus this term.
Despite predominantly operating as a defensive-minded midfielder, Rice has more than doubled his direct goal contributions this season from last.
Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton has been praising the Englishman’s improving attributes.
There’s no doubting his talent. Against Kidderminster, West Ham were really struggling. Him coming on just changed the whole outcome of the game, the way he drives forward. I’m seeing something different in him. He’s not just a defensive midfielder, he actually drives forward with purpose. Also, he’s really quick, a lot quicker than what I thought. He can dribble by people, he can see a pass and he actually can do a lot more than just be a defensive midfielder. I wouldn’t say it surprises me but I didn’t realise he had that, especially the pace aspect.
The 37-year-old went on to say that he ‘didn’t realise’ the 27-cap England man was capable of carrying such an attacking threat.
So far in 2021/22, Rice has scored four times and provided four assists in 30 appearances across all competitions for the Irons.

There has certainly been a shift in the £67.5million valued star’s game over the last 12 months.
Despite always carrying a threat from long range specifically, Rice has seemingly developed a bulldozer-like ability to brush past defenders.
Possessing each and every attribute required to be an elite level operator, West Ham should take plenty of credit for helping to harness their star man’s ability.
