Pundit backs ‘strong’ West Ham side to overcome non-league opponents

West Ham return to Worcestershire today to face Kidderminster Harriers in the FA Cup fourth round some 28 years after their last visit.

On that occasion, the Hammers prevailed 1-0 with Lee Chapman the only goalscorer on the day.

Back then the Non-League side were top of what is now known as the National League and the Irons were securing a mid-table top-flight finish.

This time it’s National League North against a Champions League-chasing West Ham and BBC Sport pundit Mark Lawrenson has backed the East Londoners to prevail.

I think Hammers boss David Moyes would have picked a strong team for this round anyway, regardless of the opposition or venue, because his side have lost two on the bounce in the league and they need to get a bit of their rhythm back. He won’t be taking any chances at Aggborough either, especially because there are no replays in this round and that adds to the jeopardy for the bigger clubs.

Lawrenson tipped the Irons to win 2-0 and progress to the fifth round – the draw for which will take place on Sunday (February 6).

David Moyes confirmed there is almost a fully-fit squad available for the clash with Angelo Ogbonna a long-term absentee and Michail Antonio doubtful due to a late return from international duty.

READ WEST HAM VERDICT

This is a match-up with all the ingredients for an old fashioned cup upset.

West Ham will have to guard against complacency as they likely face a raucous home crowd, a side with nothing to lose and perhaps even the elements.

Moyes’ men are professional to a fault for the most part and a strong side should have enough about them to progress through this one.
